...And I just seemed to be having the "blank inbox" under a dapper installation. I went in and fiddled with some of my mail server settings; I switched the authentication method from "TLS" to "SSL", and my inbox came back (note, my other folders were visible before that). Switching back to "TLS" did not seem to make my inbox go blank again.
This may not have actually been related to the encryption method; could have been a fluke.
