Public bug reported:

Binary package hint: xorg

This bug was reported previously here
https://launchpad.net/distros/ubuntu/+bug/6095/

It was rejected for lack of information. I have attached the requested
information to this bug report and the end of the rejected report for
the sake of completeness.

This problem still exists in edgy eft, max res gets set to 1280x1024 rather
than 1680x1050, leaving black bars on either side (or stretched). To fix, the
user has to edit xorg.conf and add 1680x1050 to the list of acceptable "modes".

I have attached the default xorg.conf created at install, a modified
xorg.conf that works, and the Xorg.0.log

though a custom modeline isn't needed for it to work, for the sake of
completeness the stats for the monitor are located below:

http://supportapj.dell.com/support/edocs/monitors/2005FPW/en/about.htm
VESA, 1680 x 1050(DVI)
Horizontal Frequency (kHz) 65.3
Vertical Frequency (Hz) 60.0
Pixel Clock (MHz) 146.25
Sync Polarity (Horizontal/Vertical) -/+

** Affects: xorg (Ubuntu)
     Importance: Undecided
         Status: Unconfirmed
