GRUB lists 2.6.25-2-386 and several versions of the 2.6.24 kernel. I guess these are left here as a consequence of updates made previously in 8.04. I dont have a version of the 2.6.27 kernel that I can boot. The attempt to upgrade to Ubuntu 8.10 did not run cleanly, leaving me with one broken package "totem-common" and another package that does not seem to be complete "gnome_icon_theme". I guess I did not get the correct kernel either - I did not see any error messages about that, however.
