Thanks for looking into this. I tried full screen in eog, evince and
totem. None of those seem to cause any problems.

Actually, the same holds for full screen in f-spot: it seems to work
fine in full screen mode. But the slide show is misbehaving. Could it be
anything to do with the transition effect? There's a strange flicker
before the first slide is displayed, then a couple show up fine, with a
sort of fade to white (?) between the slides, and then the system just
freezes.

Is there a way to disable the transition effect?

Something else I've noticed: after stopping (pressing power for 4s) and
shortly thereafter booting, the last image (the slide displayed when the
freeze occurs) is visible for a couple of milliseconds, just before the
gdm login screen comes up. I guess this is just a physical phenomenon
related to some property of the hardware, not sure if it's any help but
I thought I'd mention it anyway.
