Within the archive is the syslog. I've also included some screenshots... two of them show that nm-applet is actually the dot between the gnome-power-manager and update-manager icons (look carefully!) The evidence for that is the image of the message balloon coming exactly from that dot; also, right clicking on the dot brings up the nm's menu. However, I've discovered that the icon reappears if I move systray applet to a horizontal panel (it is normally on a vertical one). Perhaps it's a bug of the Xfce systray applet?
