The fix works I think because with the Launcher/Taskmanager at the right end it initiates its own redraws. If you are in the awn-manager and try reordering any of the applets, the artifacts come right back regardless of where they are. It seems like anytime an applet is not the cause of its own repaint, it is vulnerable to not being redrawn properly.
