Note: as of 31 October 2008, I am still seeing this problem with an up- to-date system. I have taken to keeping a .deb of the last good pygame (python-pygame_1.7.1release-4.1ubuntu1_amd64.deb) and simply dpkg -i'ing after every apt-get upgrade to 1.8.1release-0ubuntu1.
