Ok, I think I've found the cause .. looks like it could be the "Xinerama" setting. (i.e. graphics card independent)
This is going to hit anyone with more than one screen. (anyone who's tried Twinview and Xinerama on a decent graphics card won't be using twinview!) I'm running 4 screens here .. after reverting to Xinerama=0 in xoard.conf, problems seem to have gone away. Going one better, when running with Xinerama on, many applications, although running Ok, reported a lack of the XRANDR extension on starting up. (easy example is gkrellm) When turning off Xinerama, this error also vanishes !!
