This is also still NOT fixed on my Dell PowerEdge 400SC with the same
Samsung SyncMaster 570S TFT display, and an  ATI Technologies Inc Rage
XL (rev 27) vga controller.

I booted the desktop 8.10 Intrepid CD, as a live CD, and in this case
the system booted completely and displayed in 800x600 low-res mode. Once
I did that, I was able to copy the xorg.conf file (which I had generated
earlier by booting a 7.04 live CD) over the Intrepid version, and then
restart X by typing ctrl-alt-BS. Then the display started up in 1024x768
mode, as desired.
