It was somewhat improved in hardy. Since upgrading to Intrepid, the pictures load much faster and the delete button will work before they have all loaded. I can also switch between e-mails while pictures are loading without problems. It appears this is fixed for me with the upgrade to Intrepid.
Another image problem I was having involved only 1 source that I get emails from several times a week that contain several embedded photos. Often some of the photos would not load at all, only an "x" would appear. If I clicked on the "X", it would open Firefox on the page the picture was linked from and it would display. This was very random and only affected some of the pictures on the page and only from this one source. Since upgrading to Intrepid this is also resolved.
