I've recently rebooted my ubuntu, the applet isn't visible.

[EMAIL PROTECTED]:~$ ps axu | grep nm- | grep -v grep
root 5754 0.0 0.1 7696 3552 ? S 10:10 0:00
/usr/sbin/nm-system-settings --config
/etc/NetworkManager/nm-system-settings.conf
user 6204 0.0 0.3 23044 11480 ? S 10:11 0:00 nm-applet
--sm-disable

The nm-applet process is there it seems (the Network Manager process is
also there). Trying to start it manually yields:

[EMAIL PROTECTED]:~$ nm-applet

** (nm-applet:9454): WARNING **: <WARN>
