I appreciate all the followup you are doing on this. As I have time, I'll try to offer a better diagnosis. The intrepid release candidate i386 live CD doesn't recognize the wifi chip, so I'm still looking at an ndiswrapper scenario. A naive try at downgrading just the wpasupplicant package to the hardy binary didn't work. Since I didn't also downgrade the supporting libraries, I'm not surprised. I may try the hardy wpasupplicant from source as my next experiment.
