I compiled another image viewer for the remote machine (RHEL2.1), xnview (XnView v1.70) this time.
It, too, has the same problem. I would imageine that this sort of problem might come up, if the old X libraries the remote machine has assumed the X image was RGB and the local server (new X libraries) had allocated RGBA instead.
