** Description changed:

Ubuntu version: Ubuntu 8.10 (Intrepid Ibex) RC with latest updates
Graphic card used: ATI FireGL V335
  FGLRX package: Ubuntu package (2:8.543-0ubuntu4)
xorg-video-fglrx package version: Ubuntu package (2:8.543-0ubuntu4)
  Gnome-system-monitor package: Ubuntu package (2.24.1-0ubuntu1)

  Expected behavior:
Gnome-system-monitor starts and works fine without disturbing any other
process

  Behavior observed:
- Even just after the computer started, if I try to start gnome-system-monitor,
the X server crashes and I need to reboot (trying to restart X doesn't work).
+ Even just after the computer started, if I try to start gnome-system-monitor,
the X server crashes.

It may be an issue with fglrx itself, as if I use the open source ATI
  driver gnome-system-monitor works just fine.
+
+ EDIT: Found the cause. It was a X11 configuration issue. It seems that
+ the included fglrx version on current Intrepid, doesn't like the
+ BackingStore Option of X.
+
+ If I remove the Option "BackingStore" "On" from my X11
+ configuration, it works just fine.
