Matt, so far we just found out which commit introduced this. I'm not terribly scared of entirely reverting it (the other bug it introduces is less bad), but ATM I'm picking apart the commit and check which bit causes the tray closing. With a little luck, I can come up with a patch which keeps the return value correct and fixes this tray closing bug.
