Unfortunately, since I posted this in April and it is no October a lot has changed. For one I bought a new laptop, and I am now running 8.10 Beta on it. The new laptop and version does not seem to have the problem (although there are some other issues that have been already documented by others).
However, I can tell you that at the time I eventually found a solution to the issue in the Ubuntu Forums.
