Sorry to add more spam to this list but I at least want to log the issue with my sw/hw configuration.
The way I experienced it was first my guest vm locking my machine almost entirely (i'd get mouse movement after about 3 minutes for about a second then have to wait another 3 minutes) while performing an install on a ubuntu 8.04 ISO image i have on an external USB drive. I decided to copy the image to an SD card in my media slot. I got down to about 700Kb/s then nautilus stopped reporting progress altogether for 5 minutes at a time and then would come back with about 5 mb copied.
