Same symptoms, same workaround, but I must also add that the same machine ran Compiz quite nicely on Feisty and Hardy (enabled by default), so I do not believe the hardware is incompatible with Compiz.
I suggest others here try booting from a Hardy desktop CD and see if it runs with 'desktop effects' turned on (GNOME menu > Preferences > Appearance > Visual Effects). Either the 'normal' or 'extra' setting will use Compiz, whereas the 'none' setting uses Metacity (I think).
