** Description changed:

When creating a PDF from an Abiword document, italicized text is
sometimes converted to Roman and/or garbled when viewing the resultant
PDF. This happens whether the PDF is created via "save as" or via
  "print".

This happens with some fonts and not with others.

  Georgia: pdf okay
DejaVu Sans: italicization lost in PDF, text not garbled
FreeSans: italicization lost and text garbled in PDF
  TimesNewRoman: PDF okay
Impact: italicization lost, text not garbled
  Trebuchet: PDF okay
  Andale Mono: italicization lost
  Arial: okay
  Bitstream Charter: okay
  Bitstream Vera Sans: italicization lost
  Bitstream Vera Serif: italicization lost
  Comic Sans: italicization lost

At first I thought the key element was whether the typeface selected had
a true italic font installed but that's not true: FreeSans has an italic
  version.

It is important to note that the screen display from Abiword is, in all
cases, properly formatted, with faked italics (slanted) versions where
there is no true italics or oblique version of the typeface installed,
  for example with Imapct.

The attachment shows the result with FreeSans.
+
+ Addition: this may be a problem in a library used by Abiword to generate
+ PDFs, or in the Abiword invocation of such a library.
