Hibernate and suspend are working again as of my apt update earlier
today. This kernel version:

[EMAIL PROTECTED]:~$ cat /proc/version
Linux version 2.6.27-7-generic ([EMAIL PROTECTED]) (gcc version 4.3.2 (Ubuntu
4.3.2-1ubuntu10) ) #1 SMP Fri Oct 17 22:24:21 UTC 2008

The hibernate system is a little bit flaky --- sometimes the "Shut down"
menu refuses to appear or takes a loooong time, and then it is missing
the hibernate and suspend entries (I'd hazard a guess that the long
delay is because the hibernate/suspend compatibility test hangs). But
definitely an improvement... which is lucky as I'm about to need my
laptop on a work trip for a couple of weeks!
