Last news: I noticed that my proprietary driver (HAL) was activated. And some threads on the internet say that it should be deactivated in order to let madwifi manages the hardware.
http://infospirit.free.fr/index.php?post/2008/09/13/Atheros-AR-5007-sur- Ubuntu-Kubuntu-804-Hardy-Heron (sorry, still in French). Then, here are the tests I ran: - The proprietary driver has been disabled. - I rebooted and choose the *-21 -* kernel (the new one). - No kernel panic during the boot process. - When the system was up, I checked the wifi interface but it was not available in the list (iwconfig, ifconfig). - modprobe ath_pci froze the system (same symptoms as the kernel panic described above). Then I ran the same procedure with the previous kernel version (*-19-*): - No kernel panic during the boot process (normal). - No wifi interface available. - modprobe ath_pci worked well and activated the wifi. - Note: I checked the proprietary driver and noticed that it had been enabled, maybe by the modprobe command. Hope it will help. I still have to test with a newer version of the madwifi driver.
