Public bug reported:

Gnome-app-install spends approximately 35 seconds on my system
calculating dependencies, and it does this AGAIN after each time I
install a new package. This means that I never use it, it is simply
unacceptably slow, since I can have the package installed in that time
using Synaptic or apt.

I couldn't find a bug about this already - I'm not sure why... perhaps
for others it is not so slow, or people just don't use it. I don't think
gnome-app-install will become a convenient package manager until this is
resolved.
