about the same boot problem for me on ASUS A50VM. Sometimes the system boot normally.
Sometimes it beep and display boot text until the log screen, and then start normally. Sometimes the beeps don't stop after log screen. In the worst cases, the system hang up and display black screen (?? num lock led flashing). No way to get out of that except turning off.
