now i removed everything tracker-related from the system. wipe-out. than restarted the box. than installed all back again. restarted the box, system>preferences>search and indexing> on, on, and voila. that icon is back. i will see how well this went at the end of the day. if you hear nothing from me, everything is fine. thx
