I think we have two distinct underlying issues.  In some cases, the
problem is related to running out of file descriptors.  In others (mine,
for example) it's due to the automounter timing out the users's home
directory, rendering .Xauthority unreachable.

But, since it's getting no attention from the maintainers I suppose it's
moot either way.

On the odd chance that someone from Ubuntu ever looks at this, I am
attaching the requested information (which I'm quite convinced has
nothing to do with my problem)
