For those just wanting to be able to burn a disc, I've only found two
ways to burn discs which don't involve genisoimage, as virtually every
Linux burning frontend uses the same backend:

1. Nero Linux seems to work fine. It has a trial, and is proprietary,
but they do provide an Ubuntu package which integrates perfectly into
the system.

2. Use the freeware (but not open source) ImgBurn in Wine:
http://www.imgburn.com/. I'm amazed at how well this program works in
Wine. It uses the Wine provided API's to talk directly to the drive,
avoiding genisoimage completely.

I've yet to find any Free Software tools for burning discs which aren't
affected by this.
