For those just wanting to be able to burn a disc, I've only found two ways to burn discs which don't involve genisoimage, as virtually every Linux burning frontend uses the same backend:
1. Nero Linux seems to work fine. It has a trial, and is proprietary, but they do provide an Ubuntu package which integrates perfectly into the system. 2. Use the freeware (but not open source) ImgBurn in Wine: http://www.imgburn.com/. I'm amazed at how well this program works in Wine. It uses the Wine provided API's to talk directly to the drive, avoiding genisoimage completely.
