I have an averatec 7170 with the same AMD Turion 64 x2. I was having problems with it till I started botting noapic vga=normal
I had another AV 7170 about a month older than this one. On that one, the BIOS (and chipset) were different. 6.06 LTS was booting right from the box, no tweaks necessary. I complained to the vendor about the slow disk (5400 RPM instead of the advertised 7200 RPM) and I got the one I have now, still with a 5400 RPM, but at a discounted price...
