I have the same issue on two machines with kernel 2.6.24-19-server (Motherboard GA-MA78G-DS3H) and 2.6.24-19-generic (with an old Pentium2-Motherboard).
Hard disks seem to power down, but ubuntu logo is still shown on screen.
