Hey Daniel,

Actually I did parse this into several bugs to lay out most of the
issues, (except for the now-failed default InputDevice settings in
xorg.conf moving from alpha 6 to beta - will have to add that one).
This one was to deal with the failed X past the gdm login once all
else was working, so thought it valuable to put out all the elements
that got me to this fail in case any of the components of the
"solution" to date had screwed other things up, and had alternate
solutions/workarounds been used, (or obviated) for the bug that
started this entire path off, (the ldconfig processing failure to end
in the GUI update manager) the state that I'm currently in would not
exist.

In any case, tried the command you suggested, (sudo apt-get
install ubuntu-desktop^, with the carat). Ran through several
"already the newest version"'s, then failed back to the command line
with the following:

------
