Well, I figured out what the problem was, but I still think there should
be a way to open a terminal.

The problem was the amount of video memory I was giving the VirtualBox
virtual machine. I have a 30" monitor and if I want to use fullscreen or
seamless mode, I need to allocate at least 17 MB of video memory. I
usually set it to 20 MB just to be safe. Hardy didn't have this problem,
but Intrepid does. It simply cannot handle a video memory setting that
is not 8, 16, or a multiple of 16. So by setting my video memory to 32
MB (overkill), it works!
