I had this problem today after I did an update of my intrepid amd64 install (hadn't updated in several days). I looked in synaptics and found that the latest of several gnome packages were not installed, including gnome-settings-daemon, gnome-control-center, nautilus, gnome- common, and gnome-panel. Installing those seemed to resolve this.
