I just got this too.

I was already running a 3G Huawei modem in another USB port that was
happily connected to the 3G network. I plugged in my Sony Ericsson c902
(to charge it) and, like Foaming Draught above, the nm-applet
disappeared and Apport did its thing.

I've previously told the Network Manager not to dial this modem (the one
in my phone) but it does it anyway - perhaps a separate bug?

It seems that restarting NetworkManager leaves it in a confused state -
the icon says it's disconnected, even though the original Huawei
connection is still running.
