I removed php5-cgi and php-mysql, erased the /etc/php5/cgi/php.ini and then
# apt-get install php5-cgi # apt-get install php5-mysql so long as I install the packages in the right order, the extension line is added to the php.ini for cgi and mysql_connect() is found.
