Make sure that you have the ATI driver loaded correctly.  Run
'fglxinfo', if you see Mesa 3D or anything other than ATI.  It should
look like this:

display: :0.0  screen: 0
OpenGL vendor string: ATI Technologies Inc.
OpenGL renderer string:  Generic
OpenGL version string: 2.0.6011 (8.28.8)

If fglrxinfo doesn't show ATI, and you have the fglrx module loaded (
lsmod | grep fglrx ) then you may have the mtrr problem on Bug 3598
[https://launchpad.net/distros/ubuntu/+source/usplash/+bug/3598].  Run
'cat /proc/mtrr', if you see RAM numbers in the Terrabyte range, then
you likely have the mtrr error.
