32-bit here. There's only one sound device in /proc/asound/cards , one
soundcard sink (alsa_output.pci_8086_27d8_alsa_playback_0), all the
volume sliders and mute buttons are set in pavucontrol, and generally it
appears as if PulseAudio was running without any speakers plugged in.
Except OSS works, so clearly there's something amiss.

Actually, when running pavucontrol from the command line, playing with the 
volume sliders generates a whole pile of the following error:
** (pavucontrol:7129): DEBUG: blah: alsa_output.pci_8086_27d8_alsa_playback_0
** (pavucontrol:7129): DEBUG: -5 = No such driver
