Hadrian, you can find the log in /var/log/. It is probably Xorg.0.log or Xorg.0.log.old (if it started in safe mode).
For me the free ati driver is also much less good. I have a dual display at work, I can get dual display to work only with the fglrx driver :(. Hopefully ATI will soon release a driver that supports the latest X11, then i'll install that driver manually.
