I have downloaded Mepis, Mandrake, Gnoppix .... Gphoto2 under all of them report the same error message. Therefore this is not a problem unique to Ubuntu. I am still trying to borrow another camera to try out before buying another.
I guess my old Kodak EZ200 is past its prime. It did work however under Mandrake 10.1. I guess that end this bug report.
