I was able to reproduce this bug many times using the following steps
also demonstrated in this screencast :
http://upload.leservicetechnique.com/bugs/nvidia_crash_thunderbird.ogv

Pre-requisite to reproduce the bug :
A computer with a nvidia geforce 8300 running ubuntu 8.10 Beta up-to-date x64
with nvidia 177 kernel installed from the official ubuntu repositories. It is
preferable to have compiz enabled because the bug is worst and more visible
with compiz.

1. Install thunderbird from the ubuntu repositories.
2. Download this file to your desktop :
http://upload.leservicetechnique.com/bugs/nvidia_crash_email.eml
3. Open Thunderbird, and click on File / Open saved message.. and choose the
downloaded .eml file on the desktop.
4. Click on Message / Forward as / Inline
5. Now, click on the "Show Desktop" applet to minimize ALL windows. If nvidia
driver does not freeze there, repeat the operation multiple time. You can even
close the message and open it again.

Note : The screencast shows all weird problems on the screen except one
: the screen flashes (turn black for a second) at each mouse click. All
click without exception result in a less-than-a-second totally black
screen. This problem persist even if metacity replaced compiz after the
bug has been reproduced.
