Public bug reported:

Binary package hint: linux-image-2.6.24-19-generic

---------Description of the problem:---------------
On some events, the PC, running Kubuntu 8.04 starts to get slow. Top shows that
all processing power is shared between some running processes.
Namely: Xorg, dd, klogd and some other current active processes like kopete
or k3b.
Terminating all CPU consuming non-root processes results in sharing
all CPU power between dd and klogd.

When this happens dmesg only consist of the message

APIC error on CPU0: 08(08)

I looked into var/log/syslog and counted the amounts of this message.
Taking one second as example the message was repeated 748 times.
It looks like sometimes it happens even more frequent and syslog only captures
part of the message.

Stopping syslog, the CPU still stays high and the system responses slow,
but there is no obious process visible, using significant CPU time.

At least once it fully crashed some minutes later.

--------------How to repeat the problem:-----------------
The system were running with Kubuntu 6.06 for nearly a year without such
problems. Switching to Kubuntu 8.04 some months ago (fresh install), the problem
happened from time to time and seems to happen much more frequent in the recent
weeks (up to four times a day).

I discovered, that the problem can be repeated if someone selects an iso image
in k3b and then its happening somewhere in the process of calculating
the md5sum of the selected image.

The problem disappears as soon as the system gets restarted.

As the message says something about APIC, I tried the noapic boot option, with
the result that the system completely crashes seconds (1..30) after someone
logs in at the KDM screen. If this happens, the PC can't even be pinged anymore.

I further tried the combination of noapic, nolapic, acpi=off which resulted in
the same behaviour.

-------------The system------------------
The system is an AthlonXP 1800+ and an ATI 9600 graphic card, using the open
source 3d accelerated drivers coming with the distribution.

-----------Expected behavior-----------
Not to get slow.

Is this a bug, or a hardware failure? And is there any way to go around the
problem?

(I have full access to the hardware for the next two days, after this time it is
getting difficult as my sister moves with the PC to a new location).
