I tried from my install and from the live CD. Note that I have had my install running with the on board Intel graphics chip so that's why I added the live CD results too. I disabled the on board Intel graphics from the BIOS before rebooting to get the non-liveCD results.
I tried disabling compiz with the command you gave me below and restarting X with a ctrl-alt-backspace with my harddisk install and the live CD but neither managed to bring up the desktop graphics (still black).
