Sorry for not getting back to you everyone I've been away from ubuntu for a while but I'm back now.
Everything is fine from my original problem, however I have just discovered an interesting exception. When using the printer locally everything works as advertised, but if I use the printer as a network printer (cups sharing) the original problem resurfaces. Is this something I could fix by adjusting my cups configuration? Thanks for all your help.
