I've got a similar problem on my T43p, also with a ATi mobility chip (FireGL M24 GL). Ironically, while typing this the first time, the machine locked up :(.
I don't think this is directly related to the x.org driver, since I experience the lock ups not only with radeon, but also with the ati and the fglrx driver. Also, this happens when just working with the system, not when switching to an external video output. In about 80% of all freezes, I can still ssh into the system from another machine and see that the X server is running at 100% CPU all the time, not responding at all. Killing it with -6 works most of the time, i.e. X gets restarted and I can log in again, but sometimes the machine locks up completely after kill -6.
