Christian. Actually the "ati" driver has never played nice with my x800xl card. And they didn't this time either. This is the different combination I have tried: Driver dri glx combination works ati v v No ati x x No vesa x x Yes radeon x x Yes radeon v v Yes So with the radeon driver I didn't have to disable dri or glx.
Two things more I have noticed. I have now got edgy installed with one small issue: the break=bottom argument seems to make it to the grub menu.lst entry on the installed system. And for me it didn't break from the splash screen, so I had to guess that it was the problem when the install apparently stalled.
