SYMPTOMS: Compiz is functioning as expected however in
System->Preferences->Appearance no setting is selected
CAUSE: Unknown
STEPS TO REPRODUCE:
1/ Run ubuntu cd
2/ Goto System->Preferences->Appearance click on the Visual effects tab
3/ select a setting and close the window
4/ re open the window and the settings are blank
