Did you try to try to modify the video settings in /etc/default/acpi-
support ?

Setting these values in my case helped:

SAVE_VBE_STATE=false
POST_VIDEO=false

Using the proprietary AGP implementation of nvidia is also sometimes recommended
(set Option "NvAGP" "1" in the video device section of your xorg.conf, see 
nvidia README for details).

Can you switch to a console? Does vbetool appear in the process list
(and probably produce huge cpu load)? Maybe your bug is a duplicat or
similar to one of these an you should attach your experience there:
