I just used a xubuntu hardy live cd and it still happens. There's no need for a usb external drive: it happened with the laptop's sata disk. This disk has several partitions. On opening gparted, all four partitions are mounted and four file browser windows are opened. Unmount the devices and they will get mounted again. I could not do a simple fsck until I disabled automatic volume management in thunar properties. Then it was possible.
