Public bug reported:

Binary package hint: compiz

I am using a Thinkpad T30 with a Radeon Mobility M7 card. I have enabled
AIGLX, but Compiz fails when run. The desktop gets squished to the upper
left quarter of the screen and most windows get drawn in white.

If I switch between these squished desktops with ctrl-alt-arrow, I get a
smooth full-screen 3D accelerated transition effect. However when I try
to open the Gnome menu, its windows wobble in very slowly, obviously
without HW acceleration. When I try to replace Compiz with Metacity
again, it just freezes. Switching to console with ctrl-alt-F1 and back
again with alt-F7 makes the screen go black and hard freezes the entire
machine.

Technical info

Compiz started with this:

compiz --indirect-rendering --strict-binding --replace gconf

Metacity was restored with this:

metacity --replace

3D acceleration is working:

glxinfo | grep direct
libGL warning: 3D driver claims to not support visual 0x4b
direct rendering: Yes

Excerpts from xorg.conf:

Section "ServerFlags"
        Option "AIGLX" "on"
EndSection

Section "Extensions"
        Option "Composite" "Enable"
EndSection

Excerpts from Xorg.0.log:

(**) Option "AIGLX" "on"
(**) Extension "Composite" is enabled
