I'm really willing to help finding the bug.

I did the following

1- sudo dpkg-reconfigure -phigh xserver-xorg which did not move me
forward: I remained at the same position

2- then I've tried sudo dpkg-reconfigure xserver-xorg which has been
fine, except

I did not have any question regarding video or monitor, so no chance to
enter vesa. I faced questions regarding keyboard only

so at the end of the procedure I came back to "Video Frequency too high"

What else can I do to help you?

PS : I join you a summary of my H/W from my dual boot XP / Everest
appli. You'll see my video card is not the latest generation but so far
so good for Hardy and XP!!
