Further information: I have another installation of Intrepid on the same laptop which last ran updates maybe around or before 1800hrs UTC on the 22nd of Sep. It will suspend and hibernate well from the 2.6.27-3 kernel, but not from 2.6.27-4.
My main installation is up to date and will not suspend or hibernate on either kernel. On both installations, suspend freezes on resume with RS485/M BR#23931 showing on the screen while running 2.6.27-4. While running 2.6.27-3 on my main installation, the up to date one, it will not go into suspend or hibernate at all, but resumes immediately. A bit confusing, but hope it helps.
