Another note: Similar behavior manifests itself if one clicks on "Hibernate" in the shutdown menu. The differences are that the system turns itself off instead of locking up. Also, upon restoration of the MBR and subsequent booting of the OS, Kubuntu locks up in the boot-up progress bar screen upon which, after a reset, the MBR is again corrupted. So, in this case it takes 2 reinstallations of GRUB instead of just 1 in the standby bug.
